We know that for people who don’t deal in tax for a living, it can be hard to make sense of all of the different rules that exist for US citizens. So, when it comes to US taxation of expats in New Zealand, there is no such thing as a silly question. Feel free to ask us anything, and provided we can answer, we will.

The first stage of our process, begins with you contacting us:


Pop us an email, or give us a call, and we can get the ball rolling. To begin with, we will send you our Client Questionnaire. This is a fairly simple document, whereby we gather some basic information, which also contains tick boxes for the types of income/assets that you have. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes to complete.

Once we’ve received the completed questionnaire, we’d then send you a quote for our services. This will contain an itemised list of the US tax forms needed for your circumstances, and it will be thorough (contain everything needed to be compliant). The quote will contain a full cost, and also the payment terms. We are able to offer flexible payment terms (interest free) if requested. The quote will also contain a set of dates:

  • Date in which we would need your information by
  • Date that the tax returns would be ready for you
  • Estimated date that the review would be complete
  • Date that we expect to file

Of course, if these dates aren’t doable, that’s not a problem. We can simply adjust these as we go along, if needed.


Once you’ve signed and returned the quote, your return will then be allocated to one of our New Zealand based accountants, with an introduction email. We’ll also send you a guide to begin preparing your information. Shortly after, they will be in touch with you, with a detailed list of information they needed. You can use this as a form of checklist.

But don’t worry, whilst the information can sometimes be difficult to obtain (i.e. calling retirement scheme providers, or downloading information from the tax department website), all of our clients are able to gather this. In fact, a client being unable to obtain the information we need is incredibly rare, and happens less than once per year.

You’ll be provided with a secure upload link, where you can deposit your information, and this arrives straight into our repository. You don’t need to wait until you have gathered everything, but rather can upload it as and when you please.


Within around 4 weeks of the receipt of all information, we’d then have your completed returns ready for your review.

These will be sent to you by secure download link.

Now, you might be wondering, how on earth do I review a US tax return? Well, it can be very difficult to do this, without the prerequisite knowledge. But don’t worry, our team are experienced, and qualified IRS Enrolled Agents and in some cases Chartered Accountants also. We’ll be able to advise through anything you might need some help with.

At this stage, your tax return will be ready to file. Depending on the type of return, we may be able to electronically file direct to the IRS, or in some cases, we may need to paper file.
