Qualifications Do Matter

Why Choosing the Right Accountant Matters

At US Global Tax, we are proud of the exceptional standards our team upholds. Our accountants bring together strong academic backgrounds, professional training, and years of practical experience. We have built a reputation for expertise, accuracy, and integrity, qualities our clients rely on when it comes to navigating the complexities of U.S. tax.

Why Education and Training Matter

It is my opinion that a formal, relevant tertiary qualification is a critical foundation upon which industry-specific training and practical experience can be built.

A structured academic framework not only provides essential theoretical knowledge but also cultivates critical thinking, discipline, and analytical skills that are transferable across professional contexts.

While hands-on experience and specialized training are invaluable for developing technical expertise, they are most effective when grounded in a solid educational base that ensures consistency, depth, and a broader understanding of the field.

In this way, formal qualifications and industry experience complement one another, creating a well-rounded professional capable of adapting to evolving challenges.

A structured tertiary accounting education, combined with professional training, ensures that tax preparers have:

  • Comprehensive Knowledge – Covering taxation, financial reporting, business law, and compliance and general accounting. An understanding of accounting and international financial reporting standards and their application is critical.
  • Up-to-Date Skills – Necessary to keep pace with the ever-changing U.S. tax system.
  • Professional Standards – A foundation that supports continuous learning and accountability.

Relying on industry training (especially if self-directed only) and experience without the base of a relevant tertiary education is like building a house on a foundation of thin cement.

It may look and feel ok in the beginning but it will always end in a pile of rubble because the foundation was never strong enough.

The Risks of Choosing an Unqualified Tax Preparer

Relying on an accountant without the right background or training can lead to:

  • Incorrect interpretation and application of accounting and financial reporting standards
  • Filing errors with potential audits or fines.
  • Missed opportunities for legitimate tax savings.
  • Poor understanding of complex international tax issues.
  • Lack of accountability to professional standards.

When choosing the person to complete your IRS and FinCEN compliance, Ask the questions:

1.     What relevant tertiary qualifications do you have

None = Red flag

2.     What relevant industry licenses do you hold

None = Red flag

3.     What experience do you have

Relevant depending upon your complexity.

Ask for evidence, under the IRS code of conduct rules they are required to tell the truth.

In addition, you should ask:

1.     Are they aware of any circumstances that may affect their ability to complete your tax returns on time, such as:

a.     Any matters before the courts that may impact their qualifications or liquidity.

b.     Known periods of incapacity or extended leave

c.     Other

They should have already disclosed this as a matter of professional transparency and courtesy.

Ask us, we are very open and have an ethical philosophy of transparency.

It is extremely rare to find a good (or any) tax accountant that doesn’t have the foundation of a relevant tertiary qualification.

There is a reason for this.

Would you engage a lawyer, barrister, doctor, architect, nurse, veterinarian, dentist who doesn’t have the relevant university qualification to service you or your family’s needs?

I wouldn’t!
